From the Locomotive and Railway Preservation Magazine Sept/Oct. 1995: By B. Ann Diehl With Spring already soggy in the high country, heavy skies greeted opening day for Jim Burmingham's narrow gauge tourist rail line. Temperatures this Memorial Day weekend in Cripple Creek, Colorado - one of the nation's most famous gold camps - could just as well indicate snow as bring a rainy welcome to summer.
"We had 8 inches of snow on the flat places last weekend," he said with a smile and hello.
Not yet 40 years old, the man in the bib overalls and with coal-darkened hands introduced himself as the vice president and general manager of the Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad. Head topped by an engineer's cap, Jim explained that Sunday was generally his "easy" day, and we could talk in his office. |
